For years, a pet tracker had one job: show where a dog or cat was. The current generation is widening that promise. Products from companies such as Ask A Vet and Tractive now pair location tools with movement, sleep or behaviour signals.

What is genuinely useful?

Live location, reliable safe-zone alerts and a battery routine that fits the owner still matter most. Activity trends can add context, especially when they are presented as changes from a pet’s own routine rather than as a medical diagnosis.

What should buyers question?

Check the network, the subscription, the tracker weight, the update mode and what happens when the battery is low. A beautiful health dashboard cannot compensate for a device that cannot report from the places a pet actually visits.

Our buying ruleStart with the safety problem. Add health features only when they are clear, optional and useful to your everyday routine.

We will keep tracking this shift in our GPS tracker comparisons and ownership-cost tools.
